Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are the most dominant cause of mortality worldwide. This most often includes ischemic heart disease and stroke. Given the fact that the pathophysiological mechanism and onset of these two diseases is very similar but also very closely related, it is essential to expand medical knowledge, because as life expectancy increases, so do the number of comorbidities, thus it becomes a clinical challenge to treat patients with a different spectrum of the disease. Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common causes of stroke, and treatment is primarily focused on controlling heart rate and/or heart frequencies with anticoagulant therapy. Together with atrial fibrillation, there are other less common cardiogenic causes of stroke, with different diagnosis and treatment, depending on the etiology.
