Abstract

In present time, faster and simpler irradiation methods of blood products are required in order to prevent transplant reaction against the recipient caused by transfusion (TA-GvHD). The irradiation of blood products on the Radgil 2 device has reduced the burden placed on the linear accelerators, simplified the work process and shortened the irradiation time.
This article provides a detailed explanation of the work procedure and role of a radiological technologist in the irradiation of blood products, where they take active part in the improvement of the healthcare of patients who have the need for an irradiated blood product.
A comparison of the irradiation of blood products on the Radgil 2 device with the abandoned irradiation method on linear accelerators shows that its advantages are numerous, of which authors specially emphasized x-ray irradiation with the energy of up to 200 kV, whereas the energy of 6 MeV was used for linear accelerators.
It is concluded that for the procedure presented, the training and competences of radiological technologists are very important.
