Abstract

The paper examines the historical basis for the creation of the image of the Ottomans. The main goal of the paper is to analyze the continuity of perceptions and the ways in which patterns about the Other are taken over and upgraded over time. The work covers a wide historical period: from apocalyptic literature, medieval crusade polemics to European humanist writers. Such a longe durée approach seemed convenient because the notion of the Other has not experienced significant changes over time. Medieval authors supported the idea that Europe was the only true representative of Christianity, and on this conclusion rested the medieval European conception of the Other, on the basis of which, in turn, civilizational and religious alienation would develop in the following centuries.
