Abstract

The history of diet and the history of everyday life are historical branches which are still new and poorly researched in Croatian historiography. Collections of handwriten recipes can be well used as the good material for research, primarily as the source of facts about gastronomic everyday life. By analysing their content and by comparing them one can obtain many other information about the culture of life in the time when the collection was made, which is generally the period of several decades. Collections of handwritten recipes are particularly good source for the research of history of women since it is the women who are both authors and users of those collections. The advantage of the use of manuscript recipe collections as the sources for the research of history is in the fact that they are authentic written documents about everyday lives of the so called common people and, due to their structure, they are easily comparable. The disadvantage of such kind of documents is the difficulty in obtaining them.
