Abstract

Organic agricultural production in the Republic of Croatia from 2013 to 2020 is constantly increasing, and a similar trend is observed in the production of small grains. Without adequate knowledge that provides effective protection against harmful organisms, it is impossible to ensure stable yields. The paper presents basic guidelines for the protection of small grains against pests in organic farming. Production strategies and agrotechnical measures that reduce the incidence of pests are presented in detail. Direct measures to control harmful organisms include the use of mechanical, physical, biological and chemical methods. Only products listed in the Annex to Regulation (EC) No. 2021/1165 and registered for use in organic production of small grains in the Republic of Croatia are approved for use in organic production of small grains. Since the approved means are limited only to some fungicides, organic producers must apply agrotechnical measures that have a negative impact on harmful organisms and at the same time a positive impact on plant health.
