Abstract
An adverse event is any event that affects or threatens the safety of patients, staff, or visitors or an event that has caused or could have caused adverse consequences for the patient, staff, or visitors.
Adverse events in healthcare facilities are often caused by patients and their families, as well as accompanying persons, legal guardians, representatives, and others. Adverse events of violence towards staff in the healthcare facility can be aimed at medical or non-medical workers.
All employees of a healthcare facility can be participants in an adverse event –verbal, physical, or material – and the event can happen at all levels of the healthcare system.
Any employee who has observed or personally been exposed to a verbal, physical, or material adverse event from a patient, visitor, companion, or other people, shall verbally notify the immediate supervisor about the event and take the necessary measures to reduce the harmful consequences of the event. Reporting and analysis of adverse events against the staff of the healthcare facility is part of the introduction of a safety culture which is a prerequisite for improving overall safety within the healthcare facility.
