Abstract

The harmful effect of plant diseases, pests and other biotic and abiotic factors can
threaten the health condition of the forest. Timely diagnosis of harmful factors and prognosis
of possible danger and damage can have a considerable influence on the possibility of
timely protection of the forest. This paper presents the results of research of harmful biotic
and abiotic factors in Croatian forests from 2001 to 2005. The most important plant diseases
during the period of the research were powdery mildew and Sweet chestnut blight. The
most important harmful insects - defoliators of Continental oak forests - were geometrid
moths, european oak leaf-roll and gypsy moth, and in forests on the Karst pine
processionary moth. Bark beetles were most numerous in fir, spruce and pine forests.
