Abstract

The aim of this paper was to verify and confirm applicability of multi-stage sample in
inventarisation of forest areas. A locality in Forest administration Split, forest enterprise
Zadar, management unit Zadarski otoci, the island of Ugljan was chosen for this purpose.
Research was conducted on the afore mentioned locality with the goal of determining options
for obtaining satisfactory results of estimation of stand structural elements, which can
be used in forest management measurements, with the lowest possible sampling intensity
and by using multi-stage sample. Digital relief model (DRM) and digital orthophoto (DOP)
were created, in which different stratums were extracted and sample network was planned
in following phases (phase I: photointerpretation, phase II: selection of sample unit for aerial-
photo apprasial, phase III: selection of sample unit for terrestrial measurement). On the
basis of interpretation of extracted strata from digital orthophoto (DOP), a sample network
in second and third phase can be planned.
Research results confirmed the applicability of multi-stage samples, provided there was
a well planned implementation plan of all work phases in each determined sample phase.
