Abstract

The paper discusses the Trogir fortification of Znoilo, built near Prgomet at the very end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. The aim of the fortification was to defend the continental part of the Trogir commune from the increasingly frequent Ottoman incursions. Unfortunately, poor choice of location and difficulties in its construction, as well as the inability to pay the garrison, soon led to the demolition of the fortification, which subsequently continued to function for some time. Despite all the issues, this position, from which a wide area was monitored and alerted of dangers, remained in use until after the mid-16th century, precisely because of these characteristics. Although conceived very ambitiously and in line with the latest views on the fortification architecture at the time, the Znoilo fortification ultimately failed to fulfil its function and Trogir’s expectations.
