NEW MEDIA IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND THEIR USE IN THE TEACHING OF GERMAN IN CROATIAN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

This paper describes and establishes the possibilities of using new media in foreign language teaching. The new media can enrich foreign language teaching if foreign language teachers possess adequate technical and methodological and didactic competence. In 2005 research was conducted to establish to what extent and for what purpose teachers of German in Croatia use a computer and the
Internet. It was established that new media are gradually penetrating into the teaching process of the German language in Croatian primary schools. However, the results of research also clearly indicate
that Croatian teachers are not sufficiently familiar with all the possibilities of using new media in foreign language teaching. In this sense, the results draw the conclusion that the potential of new
media in teaching German in Croatian primary schools has not been exhausted.
