Abstract

This paper provides a historical overview of the noble Zrinski and Frankopan families from their first historical appearances to their disappearance from the Croatian historical stage. Special attention was paid to the anti-court conspiracy led by Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan. The reasons why the statehood of the Croatian Kingdom is intertwined with the existence of these noble families are described, as well as the efforts of members of the Zrinski and Frankopan families in preserving Croatian borders from both Ottoman conquests and Habsburg centralist oaths. The causes of the anti-court conspiracy and military uprising are described, as well as the reasons why the names of the Zrinski and Frankopan families have been preserved in the Croatian collective memory.
