Abstract

The meanwhile numerous studies on literary anticipations of the Great War and journalistic confrontations with the modern, mechanized mass war before 1914 all exhibit one major shortcoming: They partially or completely omit mentioning the well-known pacifist and first Nobel Peace Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner, although her successful novel »Ground Arms!« and other, journalistic texts on the level of content, composition, and language prepare literary and other textual strategies of coping with the experience of the Great War. This paper offers a detailed exploration of these strategies.
