The Economic Element in the Work of Marko Lauro Ruić

Abstract

The city notary and the officer in charge of certain duties in Pag, its historian M. L. Ruić, could not naturally ignore the economic currents within the city and on the island. Even a cursory reading of his preserved manuscripts offers some indications of the then contemporary development of the economy on the island, primarily within its administrative center. It is precisely his information about agriculture, stock-raising, fishing and the production and sale of salt that are the author’s focus of interest in this article. The reason for this is that theses supplement existing knowledge about the development of the economy in this locality throughout the centuries.
