Abstract
Because of the more and more difficult situation within traffic automobile information systems (AIS) have been developed recently. With the help of latest technics in computer science one tries to produce intelligent products, which either play the role of an active codriver in cars or serve as so called traffic information systems, mainly in connection with traffic planning for emergency or public transport. In this paper the development of such a system called AIS is described in detail. First some general facts (development, use, components) of AIS are given, which bas its origin in a computer program written at the Department of Mathematical Geodesy and Geoinforrnatics (MGGI) at the Graz University of Technology. In the sequence an insight into the basic components of AIS like positioning, path-finding and navigation is given. Furthermore you get a presentation of AIS due to the first test-area which is the centre of Graz followed by a detailed description of the test-region Alps–Adria. In this connection similarities and differences between local and global applications of AIS are delt with.
