Abstract

In speleological explorations, cavers use equipment constructed from various types of metals and electronic components, among other materials. Due to the magnetic properties of these metals, the various pieces of equipment can affect one of the primary goals of each exploration – cave surveys, by affecting the azimuth readings taken with measuring instruments. In this paper the effect that the most common pieces of equipment have on the azimuth readings is analysed, with the help of two measuring instruments – Leica Disto X310 and BRIC4. Their effect is examined at distances between 0 and 30 cm from the instruments, and for each instrument three groups of pieces of equipment are identified based on their effect on azimuth readings. Recommendations are given regarding handling of the equipment and instruments in specific situations we find ourselves in while surveying caves.
