Abstract

Patent ductus arteriosus is one of the most common congenital heart diseases in dogs which can cause congestive heart failure in 70% of dogs affected if left untreated. It was found to be more common in females and many breeds can be affected, as well as mixed breed dogs. In dogs it has a polygenic inheritance pattern and results from hypoplasia or asimmetry of ductal smooth muscle and the presence of aorta-like elastic tissue in the ductus wall which prevents its closure. This article presents gross and histopathological findings of patent ductus arteriosus in a female, 7 month old Doberman dog necropsied in Department of Veterinary Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb.
