Abstract

Introduction: Day surgery involves the performance of a therapeutic procedure and the patient going home on the same day. This type of treatment is ideal for children and parents because it minimizes the stress and fear of being in the hospital. Providing health care through day pediatric surgery can greatly increase parental satisfaction and perceptions of the quality of health services provided, and at the same time, rationalize costs.
Aim: The research aims to examine parents' satisfaction with the organization of work at the pediatric otolaryngology day surgery and to identify potential areas for improvement.
Materials and methods: The research is a cross-sectional prospective study conducted in Children’s hospital Srebrnjak at the otolaryngology day pediatric surgery in the period from January 1, 2021, to June 1, 2021. The research sample consisted of 100 subjects. Subjects were parents, guardians, or escorts of children who came to the operation in Children’s hospital Srebrnjak. They were approached at the Department of otolaryngology before being discharged home with a request to complete a questionnaire while ensuring voluntariness and anonymity. For the research, a validated questionnaire on patient satisfaction with the care provided in a day hospital called "Core questionnaire for the assessment of Patient Satisfaction - Day care" (COPS-D) was used. The questionnaire was translated into Croatian and modified for research purposes.
Results: The results showed a high level of satisfaction in all surveyed areas. In the area of preoperative preparation, Department of otolaryngology, operating room, and nursing care, all 100 respondents were satisfied. A total of 98 respondents were satisfied with medical care, 99 with information, and 97 expressed satisfaction in the field of autonomy. All 100 respondents are satisfied with the overall organization of work. Respondents expressed the lowest level of satisfaction during the visit and examination, and this is the area for improving the work of pediatric otolaryngology day surgery.
Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, it has been found that the majority of examinees are satisfied with the organization of the work of the pediatric otolaryngology day surgery, and we can recommend this model of work organization to all institutions and departments that provide surgical treatment to children.
