Abstract

Complementary health insurance is one of the three types of voluntary health insurance regulated by the Voluntary Health Insurance Act. It covers the cost of health care related to compulsory health insurance care in the part in which insured persons are obliged to participate in the cost of health care i. e. the price of pharmaceutical drugs. This type of insurance was introduced with the Health Insurance Act in 1993, conceptually enveloping complementary and supplementary voluntary health insurance of today, and in the period of almost thirty years it has hardly gone through any substantial changes. Following this period of application, this paper attempts to consider possible scenarios and directions of development of this type of insurance in the Republic of Croatia.
