Abstract

The lecture “Die österreichische Architektur in ihrer Entwicklung zur Moderne” (Austrian architecture in its development towards modernity) in 1959 was the motivation for Renate Wagner-Rieger to start working on 19th-century architecture. Still, it also prompted her to publish more on its preconditions around 1800. She described the phase from 1770 to 1830 as an “interweaving of a whole series of currents” in Viennese and Austrian architecture. She underlined the stylistic pluralism of this epoch for the first time.
