Abstract

In this paper we focus on selected expressions written in 1881 by Anteo Gravisi from Koper/Capodistria. In Koper, until the beginning of the last century, there were two varieties of the Istrian-Venetian dialect, used by the upper and lower social classes. The language of the paolans (It. paolani), cortivans (It. cortivani), fishermen and other poorer townspeople differed somewhat from the language of the rich townspeople. We were interested in which of the written words survived in the century after they were written down. In the analysis, we have relied on the available dialectological material recorded in Koper between 1900 and 2020 (books or monographs, dictionaries, field data) to confirm the current use, change, transformation or abandonment of lexemes. At the same time, we establish a link between these lexemes and their origin, relying on the relevant etymological dictionaries, and verify which of the mentioned Istrian-Venetian expressions were adopted by Istrians with Slovene roots.
