Abstract
Rural gardens as part of cultural heritage include specific plant species and have been shaped by a variety of natural, historical and cultural influences of any region. Th is work is the first study of ornamental plants in rural gardens in Brod-Posavina. It is covered by 269 gardens in 170 villages and 28 municipalities of Brod-Posavina. In the gardens were found 640 taxa belonging to 121 families. The most represented families are Asteraceae with 53 taxa, Cupressaceae with 52 taxa and 38 taxa from Rosaceae. Th e most common taxon is Rosa spp., followed by Chrysanthemum spp., Paeonia officinalis L., Syringa vulgaris L., Pelargonium zone (L.) Aiton, etc. The most common life forms are fanerophytes and hemikryptophytes. Th e average of taxa in gardens is 46. Gardens of mountain and lowland areas and the western part of the county differ from each
other, the less on the average number of taxa and more on floral composition. In smaller gardens of remote and poorer villages, are often used less demanding taxa, that maintain that legacy of grandmother and grandmother of the present inhabitants, so they can be called traditional. The presence of indigenous ornamental plants (23 %) in the study area has a positive eff ect on overall vegetation gardens in this region. Insight into the situation and perspectives of traditional village gardens is an important project for the protection, restoration and maintenance of cultural heritage.
