Abstract

Paliperidone is a second-generation antipsychotic, long-acting oral drug prescribed in a single daily dose, and a metabolite of risperidone. It is a strong antagonist of serotonin 5-HT2 and dopamine D2 receptors, and acts as a H1 histamine and alpha-1 blocker, and to a lesser extent alpha-2 adrenergic receptor. It is registered as treatment for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder for patients 15+ years of age. Paliperidone palmitate is a long-acting antipsychotic administered intramuscularly in different doses prescribed on a monthly, three-month, and six-month scale, after stabilization of the clinical picture with oral therapy of paliperidone or risperidone. It is registered as treatment for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in adults aged 18 to 65.
