Abstract

Mathematician and member of the Society of Jesus Franjo Ksaver Staindl (1746 – 1818) was born in Križevci, and entered the Jesuit novitiate in Vienna. He specialized in mathematics in Graz. The paper presents previously unknown biographical information and discusses why Franjo Ks. Staindl should be attributed the independent authorship of the textbook Institutiones arithmeticae in usum gymnasiorum et scholarum grammaticarum, which was in use in Croatian countries at the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the
19th century translated into Croatian by Ambroz Matić.
