Abstract
For the first time, the paper presents in detail the work and activities of the Hungarian-language elementary school that operated in Novska at the end of the Austro-Hungarian period. The school was founded by the Hungarian State Railways in 1913 and was one of the few schools of its type that operated in Western Slavonia, in contrast to a number of schools with Hungarian as the teaching language that operated in Eastern Slavonia at the time. The main sources used for the work are preserved in heritage institutions in Hungary and were compiled by the then Hungarian administration, written in the Hungarian language and, together with the relevant Hungarian literature, compared with the Croatian perspective of the above presented issue.
