Abstract

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hearing impairment in
newborns using automatic otoacoustic emission (A-OAE) in Virovitica County Hospital
Maternity Ward. Screening includes all newborns born in the period from 2012-2014.
Hearing was tested on 2188 (98.9%) newborns among which 133 (6.1%) had positive
hearing impairment results. 9 (0.4%) newborns had positive results and were reffered to
a secondary institution (Policlinic SUVAG, Zagreb) where 3 (0,14%) of them were
confirmed hearing impairment. Results confirm the importance of early screening for
hearing impairment of all newborns after birth in maternity ward.
