Abstract
The use of diagnostic reference levels in daily clinical practice with the aim of optimising the procedures performed with X-ray devices for computed tomography can be challenging if they are given for specific anatomical regions. The reason for this is the fact that different protocols can be used for imaging the same anatomical region, depending on the required level of image quality, which is determined by the clinical indication. Comparison of typical values of dosimetric quantities with such diagnostic reference levels can be misleading with regard to the need for taking corrective measures either with the aim of reducing patient exposure or with the aim of improving the quality of diagnostic information. For this reason, it is important to establish and use diagnostic reference levels that are given for a particular clinical indication, which will be shown in this paper on several examples from everyday clinical practice.
