Abstract

Ecotoxicology assesses the risk for non-target plant and animal species when applying plant protection products. The aim of the risk assessment is to predict possible adverse effects on the environment with the use of the toxicity data of individual active substances, metabolites and plant protection agents. The first stage of the risk assessment is exclusively quantitative, and the initial calculations can show that there is a certain risk when applying the product. In such a case, it is necessary to carry out a higher tier risk assessment which can result in certain measures to reduce the risk. Application of plant protection products, in a manner that is safe for the environment, is approved in accordance with the Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009. The Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food - Centre for Plant Protection is responsible for the environmental risk assessment, which includes two closely related areas: environmental behavior and ecotoxicology.
