Abstract
The draft of the new Regulation of the European Parliament and Council on the sustainable use of plant protection products and changes of the Regulation (EU) 2021/2115, on establishing the framework for achieving sustainable use of pesticides in EU brings several major changes in pesticide use at the EU level, of which the goal of reducing the use of chemical pesticides by 50% at EU level by 2030 stands out. Additionally, the intention is to encourage the use of pesticides which pose lower risk, including biopesticides. However, despite the indications that the biopessticides are generally less toxic than their chemical counterparts, they are not widely used in EU. This is partly due to the risk assessment process of plant protection products before their approval for use in EU. Further, the approval of new active substances for use in plant protection in EU is a lenghty procedure and demands significant economic expenses for the approval owners. Now, new EU strategies, from field to fork and green deal, bring notable changes to the requirements for placing biopesticides on the EU market.
