Testing the Example. Observations on Presenting the Historical Avant-garde as a Network

Abstract

The idea of the artistic avant-garde as a network may offer various benefits, but it becomes apparent that it is not entirely unproblematic when it is put to test: the typical evidence for an avant-garde network suggests that the avant-garde utilized many connections that were sometimes far from avant-garde. In this respect, the notion of the avant-garde as a network needs to be reconsidered.
