Abstract

Tin Ujević, arguably the most prominent poet of classical modernism in Croatia, maintained a complex relationship with the avant-garde both during his lifetime and in his later reception. The poetological shifts and fluctuations in the use of avant-garde elements typically led to the conclusion that Ujević engaged only concerned with elements, phases or partial incorporations of the avant-garde. In contrast, this article underscores the comprehensive nature of Ujević’s impact on the literary field, highlighting his revolutionary departure in relation to the concepts of mimesis, subjectivity and linearity – all of which can be interpreted as an implicit response to the theoretical debate on the repeatability of the avant-garde.
