Faith and the Avant-garde? The Poet-Revolutionary Paul Adler in the Networks of the ›New‹ Ones

Abstract
This article explores the connection between faith and the artistic and social aspirations of the avant-garde, using the expressionist poet-revolutionary Paul Adler (1878–1946) as a case study; a connection heretofore largely overlooked in research. It elucidates that Adler’s syncretic faith served as the underpinning for a philosophy of history that profoundly influenced his poetic works and political activity during the 1918/19 revolution. Given that Adler was far from being an outsider among the modernist circles, the article recommends a broader examination of the role of faith and religion within the context of the avant-garde in general and during the tumultuous early 20th century in particular.
