Abstract
The journalism of Theodor Däubler (1876–1934) and Carl Einstein (1885–1940) serve as a testament to the activist and reflexive approaches they both adopted toward the progressive art movements of their time. Their art criticism can be presented and evaluated as a dynamic interplay between active engagement and objective observation of the avant-garde. This article begins by analyzing Däubler and Einstein’s profile as art critics within the structure of the avant-garde. The article then delvs into the evolution of their art criticism and its context, using George Grosz as a case study.
