Abstract
The fate of refugees on their way across the Mediterranean has been vividly captured in Liebe deinen Nächsten (2017) by Gaby von Borstel and
Peter Eickmeyer in which they recount their three-week experience on a
rescue ship. The relationship between language, writing and image; the
changing content of the pronoun ‘we’ and the noun ‘sea’; the crucial role
of narration; the interplay between the book and the authors’ blog; and
the practical use of the volume for a fundraising campaign are but some
of the most significant aspects of this graphic novel that illustrate what a
versatile and powerful depiction of the ‘fragmented flight to Europe’ (B.
Etzold) Liebe deinen Nächsten offers its readers.
