Abstract

The paper questions the attitude of believers towards the nativity scene in the church in the light of the piety of believers, presenting four unusual compositions of the nativity scene in the churches of the Diocese of Subotica, through an ethnological approach and from the perspective of cultural anthropology. Based on an analysis of personal stories of people in charge of setting up the nativity scene in churches, we are striving to find out what the nativity scene means to them personally and what role the nativity scene plays in society in general. That is, whether it is only a part of the church inventory and décor at Christmas time or the Christmas nativity scene in Subotica can be considered
as a form of traditional piety of Catholic believers. The paper also uses theological insights in connection with the interpretation of certain aspects of religion, as well as the social practices that were studied.
