Abstract

Allergic diseases have shown a dramatic increase since the end of the 20th century. The majority of the data come from the results of the International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC). The gross domestic product (GDP) has been the most important global risk factor for allergic diseases. New data from the city of Zagreb have shown a stabile prevalence of childhood asthma (5.7%) and an exponential increase in allergic rhinitis (AR) (35%) and atopic dermatitis (AD) (18%). One of the possible explanation come from the synergistic effect of the pollen and air pollution. Urgent strategies are needed, including better human contact with nature and diminishing air pollution.
