Coloman’s legacy in northern Dalmatia

Abstract

Contrary to the opinion of traditional historiography that Coloman, a foreign ruler, caused a discontinuity in the independence of the Croatian state by ascending to the Croatian throne, the authors of this paper present evidence that this king actually restored peace, thus allowing everyone, as stated in a document by the abbess of the monastery of St. Mary in Zadar, Vekenega, to ‘go about their business’. Coloman carried on and maintained the continuity of his predecessors, ruling entirely according to their principles. Through his architectural, numismatic, written and other legacies, he left a profound mark on the territory of northern Dalmatia. He wholeheartedly embraced the institution of the Croatian ruler, establishing an indelible memory of alliance and loyalty between the Zadar commune and the king. These were virtues the people of Zadar had
relied upon during numerous uprisings against the Venetian Republic.
