100 Years of the Gauss-Krüger Projection

Abstract

The Gauß-Krüger projection became the official state projection in the Kingdom of SHS in 1924. This review provides basic information on the selection and introduction of this projection on the territory of the then state, which included Croatia. We provide a definition of this projection and its basic properties. We explain the need to introduce negative distortion on the central meridian of the mapping area, and with that, the division of the territory into systems, i.e. zones. Finally, we remind of the possibility of interpreting the Gauß-Krüger projection as a double mapping. First, the ellipsoid is mapped to the sphere, and then the sphere to the plane. In this way, the use of the name conformal transverse cylindrical projection for this projection can be justified.
