Abstract

In most cases, analysing hydrological data is related to the definition of a linear trend and its adequate interpretation. Although not complex, the unreliability of this analysis frequently used in hydrology may pose a problem at low values of the coefficient of determination R. Inaccurate conclusions may lead to poor assessments during the sizing of hydrotechnical facilities. The impact of climate change additionally contributes to this challenge. The paper will present a methodology for determining homogeneity and isotropy of analysed data with the aim of determining the unreliability level of obtained linear trends. To this end, the Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA) method will be applied to the Bednja River in the Republic of Croatia by analysing a series of average daily flows in the duration of twenty years at the gauging station Ludbreg.
