Abstract
The work aimed to examine the impact of comorbidities on the outcome of treatment of patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the Travnik Hospital in Travnik. A retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 in whom infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus was etiologically confirmed by a positive result of the RT-PCR test was carried out. The study included patients hospitalized between September 16, 2020 and June 15, 2021. During the observed period, a total of 1,874 patients were hospitalized due to COVID-19, of which 1,190 (64%) were men and 684 (36%) were women. Eight patients were younger than 18 years (median 8; range 2-17 years), in other age categories the median was 65 (range 18-95 years). A total of 1179 (62.8%) patients had one or more comorbidities, the most common of which were cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension (49.2%), diabetes (16.6%), and COPD/asthma (3.4%). The most common symptoms of the disease were fever (89.7%), cough (73.7%), dyspnea (45.7%), diarrhea (45.3%) and malaise (33.1%). 313 (16.7%) patients had a mild form of the disease, 692 (36.9%) had a moderate form, 665 (35.5%) had a severe form, and 204 (10.9%) had a critical form. 804 (42.9%) patients needed oxygen treatment, and 365 (19.5%) patients needed treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients with heart disease and COPD develop significantly more severe symptoms and a relatively higher mortality rate. Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus becomes very harmful when it affects a person with comorbidity, therefore, treatment of these patients should be a priority.
