Abstract
Eastern part of the Drava depression roughly covers the area of 5200 km2 where thickness of Neogene-Quaternary infill can locally reach more than 6 km. Neogene-Quaternary sequence has oil and gas plays confirmed by exploration carried out for more than 50 years. Even after such a long history of exploration and production of oil and gas, regional basin analysis shows that there is still potential for finding new oil and gas prospects. Additionally, with respect to the transition towards green energy and carbon neutral society, it is worth considering that this part of Croatia yields potential for exploitation of geothermal resources, carbon capture and geological storage, as well as for underground energy storage. Elevated geothermal gradients in the subsurface which can locally be higher than 5 °C/100 m provide large future potential for various types of utilisations of geothermal energy from Neogene-Quaternary formations as well as from fractured pre-Neogene basement rocks. It is envisaged that carbon storage and underground energy storage operations will develop trough time as majority of oil and gas fields are near the end of their production period.
