Abstract

In this research, an examination of diverse data sources, including archival records, statistical data, and agricultural censuses, was conducted to analyze the changes in land use within the Koprivnica-Križevci County over the past 120 years. Throughout this period, arable land and forests emerged as the predominant land categories. The most notable changes were observed in vineyards and grassy land categories (pastures and meadows), which experienced a considerable decrease in area relative to other land types. In contrast, orchards maintained a relatively stable acreage. The alterations in land use can be attributed to various factors, with economic and demographic considerations playing a primary role. Despite the discernible changes in land use over the observed period, it is noteworthy that these alterations did not exert a disproportionate influence on the present-day landscape of the county. The contemporary landscape was largely shaped by the beginning of the 20th century, marked by the intensified suppression of the natural landscape and the expansion of arable land during preceding centuries.
