Abstract

Early intervention is a term used today for the services of professional incentive support for the child and advisory assistance to parents and guardians up to the third, and at the latest, up to the seventh year of the child’s life. It is provided when child’s developmental deviation is identified at an early age. For hard-of-hearing children, support
begins with a newborn hearing screening test at the maternity hospital. In the 20 years since hearing rehabilitation has been provided to users in the form of early developmental support, many changes have taken place, including the ever earlier age of users, the technological progress of hearing aids, the social and cultural changes in society that affect the profile of parents and the style of parenting, and the transition from an educational model of early intervention to a parent-oriented model in which all roles other than parenting are taken away from the
parent. Parents from two Croatian cities answered survey questions about involvement in the rehabilitation process, expectations from hearing rehabilitation and habits of spending time together. Based on their answers, the efficacy of parent-directed procedures was checked, as well as parents’ willingness to be equal partners in the therapeutic process. The results indicate a high level of satisfaction with parenting despite child’s hearing impairment, ready acceptance of responsibility for child’s progress, positive emotions about their own equal role
in hearing rehabilitation, and mothers are especially singled out as partners in the rehabilitation process compared to other family members. The results highlight the measurably short time that rehabilitators devote to counselling
parents about procedures at home.
