Abstract
At the very beginning of the process of ethnic grouping we are to expect a highly vivid and conspicuous
experience of the Foreignness of the Others. Nevertheless, that original „contrastive experience“
(C. Geertz), on which the ethnic constitution is based, does not mean that the expressive power of
the contrast will be the same everywhere. This power is to be seen easily in the contrastive analysis
of the ethnic differences of the two groups. In some cases the contrast can be indeed strong and
sharp, whereas in other cases it can be weak and rather murky. The power of the contrast can be
seen in the objective characteristics of the both sides, but also in the intensity of the Foreignness.
The second-mentioned parameter should be decesive as it is clear from the examples of the large
disproportion between the objective cultural difference and intensity of foreignness. Highly influential
researchers of the ethnic and national identity, like M. Weber, W. Connor and A. D. Smith,
were exactly because of it drawn, if not even fascinated, by the ethnic difference between Croats
and Serbs.
