Discussion on a Specialized Topic in Business German in an Online Environment and its Efficiency

Abstract
Discussion as a selected method in teaching a language for specific purposes (LSP) is a
demanding activity for both teachers and students. It contributes to the development of the
receptive language skills of listening and reading comprehension and of language production
as well as numerous social skills, such as active listening, argument presenting, collaborative
studying, and critical thinking. Teaching a language for specific purposes in an online
environment requires the adaptation of conventional teaching methodology. This article deals
with the phases of preparation, implementation, and evaluation of a discussion in German
carried out online using Google digital tools in the course Fundamentals of Business German
3 in the 2020/2021 academic year. The paper also presents the results of a survey conducted
to evaluate the efficiency of the selected online activities based on the student evaluation of
the level of interactivity, autonomy, and motivation achieved as a result of the activities done
in class. The online activities include the teacher’s presentation of the content in real time on
the Google Meet video conferencing platform accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation,
pair work on a shared Google document in breakout rooms, and student discussion on a
specialized topic in a video meeting. The research data on the student evaluation was collected
through a written structured interview with the help of an online Google form questionnaire,
after which a quantitative analysis was conducted.
