Abstract

The Department of Viticulture and Enology at the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb has been a cornerstone of viticulture and enological education in Croatia for over a century. Since its foundation in 1919, it has significantly influenced the Croatian wine industry through research, cooperation with the industry and practical training of students. The department focuses on the preservation and revitalization of indigenous grape varieties, the development of disease-resistant varieties, improvement of vine production and research on adaptation of viticulture to climate changes. An important asset is the National Collection of autochthonous Croatian grape varieties, which has been kept at the Jazbina experimental station which was established in 1939 and serves as an important resource for research and teaching. Recent research initiatives have included clonal selection, sustainable viticulture practices, wine quality improvement and the development of new resistant grape varieties using state-of-the-art technologies. These efforts underscore the Department’s ongoing commitment to advancing the field and addressing current challenges in viticulture and enology.
