Antifungal activity of Melissa officinalis and Myrtus communis essential oils

Abstract

An in vitro study of the volatile effects of Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) and Myrtus communis (myrtle) essential oils on phytopathogenic fungi Macrophomina phaseolina, Alternariaster helianthi, Alternaria radicina, Stromatinia cepivora, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Botrytis cinerea, Monilinia laxa and Verticillium dahliae was carried out. Essential oils were applied that the volume fraction of oil in the air was 0.01; 0.03 and 0.05 %. The antifungal effect of the oil depended on the type of essential oil, the volume fraction of the oil in the air and the type of fungus. Myrtle essential oil did not inhibit the growth of S. sclerotiorum, A. radicina, B. cinerea and V. dahliae, while lemon balm oil did not inhibit the growth of S. sclerotiorum, A. radicina and V. dahliae even at the highest applied amount of oil.
