Abstract

Thrombophilia is a condition with an increased tendency for developing thrombosis, and includes inherited or acquired disorders. Although there are many acquired conditions and diseases that are included in acquired thrombophilia, traditionally the term “thrombophilia” most often refers to inherited thrombophilia. This work will describe the most common inherited thrombophilias (FV Leiden mutation, prothrombin FII20210A mutation, deficiency of antithrombin, protein C and protein S), and the significance of testing for clinically significant thrombophilias in certain indications.
