Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) rarely occurs in children. With improvement of treatment and medical care, the number of seriously ill children is increasing, so VTE is becoming a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in children. VTE most often occurs as part of acquired thrombophilia, such as malignant disease, systemic connective tissue disease, trauma and systemic infection. The clinical picture depends on the thrombus site and risk factor of its formation. Asymptomatic thrombosis is common in children during treatment of the malignant disease and is most often caused by a central venous catheter (CVA). In diagnosing VTE in children, Doppler ultrasound carries the most important role, except in intrathoracic thrombosis, when venography is preferred. The goal of VTE treatment is to stop thrombus progression, recanalize the blood vessel and reduce risk of subsequent aftereffects, mainly post-thrombotic syndrome.
