Abstract

Using phenomenological P, e, T equations of state of propylene, ethylene, liquid xenon, liquid argon, methane, nitrogen and oxygen, we have analysed the global behaviour of µ, e, T surfaces in the noncritical region, looking for experimental evidence in support of catastrophe theory. In addition to the Riemann-Hugoniot (cusp) catastrophe displayed by the Van der Waals equation of state, these experimentally determined surfaces also indicate the possibility of higher order, butterfly catastrophe.
