Terminologic Procedures in the Creation of Medical Terminology

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze terminological procedures in the creation of medical terms. Latin and Greek make the basis of medical terminology, so their large number in the basic branches of medicine is not surprising. In recent decades, the great influence of the English language has been noted, because with the appearance of new phenomena, their English terms are accepted. Under the influence of linguistic purism, the creation of native equivalents is encouraged, and thus variations occur. Variations have a functional role in terminology and are no longer considered a linguistic anomaly. Since language is a dynamic system, the meanings of terms change, widen or narrow depending on various factors. For this reason, the adoption of terms from other professions is a frequent terminological procedure with the changes or retention of meaning. Medical terms are also accepted in other professions and in general language, so metaphorization is very common. Terminologicalization of names was a common terminological procedure in past centuries, but today this trend is decreasing. In the paper, the analyzed terminological procedures will be supported by examples from medical publications.
